Silent propulsion
The JOOOL Electric Drive is a direct-drive electric propulsion system for sailing yachts, designed to replace the diesel engine entirely and generate electricity from the propeller while sailing. Available in three power variants, covering monohulls and catamarans from 40 to 65 feet, it is the propulsion heart of the JOOOL OneBox Propulsion system.
CONFIGURATONS
What makes
the Electric Drive different
The Electric Drive motor shaft connects directly to the propeller shaft. No gearbox, no mechanical losses, no vibration transfer to the hull. This is not a cost-saving simplification, it is an engineering choice that delivers higher efficiency, lower noise, and dramatically reduced maintenance compared to any geared drive system. At 1,000 RPM nominal, the motor operates at the optimal speed for a 22–26 inch propeller, achieving over 93% efficiency at design point.
When sailing with the propeller freewheeling in the water, the Electric Drive reverses operating mode automatically, the propeller's rotation drives the motor in generator mode, feeding electrical current back into the battery bank via the OneBox. At 7 knots, a single Electric Drive recovers approximately 1.5 kWh per hour. On a twin-engine catamaran at the same speed, this doubles to 7 kWh per hour.
This is the feature that transforms the energy arithmetic of ocean cruising. A catamaran sailing 8 hours at 7 knots recovers approximately 56 kWh — more than many vessels' entire battery capacity. Combined with solar, many JOOOL-equipped yachts operate for weeks without starting the generator.
IP69 is the highest waterproof and dustproof rating available, designed for high-pressure hot-water washdown at close range. Fully submersible without risk. Industrial-grade marine connectors rated IP68. The Electric Drive lives below the waterline and must perform reliably in the harshest marine environment — and it does.
The PowerPod uses the surrounding seawater as its cooling medium — heat transfers from the motor casing directly to the water through which the hull moves. No freshwater cooling circuit, no heat exchanger, no impeller, no coolant. This eliminates an entire system that would otherwise require annual service and is a common source of engine bay failures on diesel installations.

QUESTIONS
Everything you want to know
Yes. The Electric Drive is available for both hull types. Monohull installations use a single unit; catamaran installations use one unit per hull (two total). The vessel compatibility table above gives sizing guidance by LOA.
For performance sailing where speed under sail is a priority, the foldable propeller option is recommended — it significantly reduces drag when the propeller is not in use. For cruising yachts where motoring performance and simplicity take priority, the fixed propeller is the standard choice.
In most production yacht integrations, the Electric Drive is installed without structural modification to the hull — it replaces the existing diesel drive in the same footprint. JOOOL's engineering team assesses each vessel individually.
