Leopard 46 Hybrid: Integrated Electric Propulsion and Energy Management System

The Leopard 46 Hybrid represents a new step in the evolution of long-range cruising catamarans. Already a proven platform for liveaboard and offshore sailing, this model now benefits from a full electric propulsion and energy system integration carried out by JOOOL. Our approach focused on delivering a seamless, quiet, and user-friendly experience without altering the layout, functionality, or design of the original vessel.

Hybrid Sailing Experience

Sailing performance remains true to what the Leopard 46 is known for — stable, responsive, and efficient under sail. What changes with the hybrid system is everything that surrounds the navigation itself. Transitions between sailing and motoring are seamless. Manoeuvring in harbours or gliding out of an anchorage happens in near-total silence, without engine noise or vibration. Under electric power, the boat reaches cruising speeds of up to 8 knots, with smooth, linear acceleration and no emissions.

Once at anchor, the benefits of the hybrid system become even more noticeable. The onboard environment is quiet and fully functional — air conditioning, galley appliances, refrigeration, and lighting all run directly from the battery bank. There’s no need to start a generator during most anchorages, which contributes to a more peaceful and energy-efficient lifestyle onboard.

To maintain autonomy, the batteries can be recharged using several sources: shore power, solar panels (up to 2800 W), hydrogeneration while sailing, or a 24 kW backup generator when needed. The entire electrical system is managed by OneBox, our integrated energy management module. It continuously monitors energy flows, balances loads, and prioritises charging — adapting in real time to how the boat is being used. This allows crews to focus on sailing and living, rather than managing systems.
