Hydrogeneration at Sea: How our PowerPod turns ocean motion into clean energy
As the maritime industry shifts toward more sustainable and efficient solutions, hybrid and electric propulsion systems are becoming increasingly popular. At JOOOL, we’ve developed the PowerPod—a compact and efficient electric pod mounted under the hull. One of its key innovations is hydrogeneration: the ability to generate electricity from water flow while sailing.
What is Hydrogeneration?
Hydrogeneration is the process of generating electricity from water movement. When a boat is under sail or otherwise moving through the water, the flow spins the propeller of the PowerPod. This rotation drives the electric motor in reverse, turning it into a hydrokinetic generator. It captures the kinetic energy of the water and converts it into usable power for the onboard systems.
The PowerPod is a reversible electric propulsion system housed in a submerged nacelle, featuring:
A high-efficiency propeller designed for both thrust and regeneration.
Smart power electronics that seamlessly switch between propulsion and generation modes.
Natural seawater cooling for optimal thermal management.
Integration with onboard battery packs or hybrid systems.
⚡ Increased autonomy: passive battery charging during navigation.
🌱 Zero emissions: silent, clean energy at sea.
🔇 No noise pollution: no need for gensets while sailing.
🛠️ Low maintenance: no complex shaft systems
🌍 Eco-conscious design: ideal for sustainable cruising
